The way that I measured success while working as an intern was just completing the small tasks of my every day. There’s always a lot of moving pieces at this organization and you never know what to expect from each day which would a good thing because I made it exciting but it was hard to be able to have an exact label of what actually mean success so whatever a list of tasks I have for the day as long as I got it done I feel accomplished and like actually did some My work is significant past just being a high school intern the project of the agility course with some thing that my mentor has been toying with and thinking about doing for a long time just wasn’t sure and didn’t want to buy a cheap set to put together and now she has a customized therapy agility set for her dogs. This could potentially help a lot of dogs after they’ve had surgery on any part of their body or if they need any exercise or help with their training strategies build confidence or whatever they need this could come in handy anywhere. Must have to work in this field is people skills not just be able to start a conversation or be professional but also have tolerance for people who are not patient and are not understanding you need to be able to empathize with them and understand where others come from and really just have a lot of patience. The key isto be really calm and collected being around dogs who have been through trauma or are very skittish and nervous. Do you want to be Real with them because they can tell when you’re nervous and you’re scared of them because you don’t know what they’re can I do because they are dogs. One thing that I’m learning about myself or I guess more reminded that I’m kind of a
softy. Having a hard time seeing some of the dogs in pain and not being able to help them. I don’t think I’d be any good at being a vet or being in this business just because it’s so heartbreaking to see and I think I take it a little too close to home and it’s it’s been difficult. Even though it’s difficult I’m still enjoying every second I have with all of them. We were able to go to a senior home with our senior dogs and it made their month every senior there was so excited just be around a dog and that made my week. Another thing that I am really enjoying is placing dogs in homes because for that family to be so excited to have a new pet it’s just such a great feeling for me and for them. It’s interesting that last year I was working at children’s theater and this year I met a senior dog rescue but I’m actually doing very similar work. Not exactly the same but last year I was doing set building and fundraising and poster making managing small children. Kind of similar here I am building and making posters fundraising and managing dogs. I really do wish that I could work full-time with dogs and animals in pain but I just don’t think I could emotionally handle it kind of makes me sound like a wimp but I really do think that’s true. I think as a side volunteer work as my life goes on I could definitely see myself fostering animals are helping out at adoption events I think that would be great for me but not as a full-time occupation. For my internship I am creating a therapy/agility dog course. Fitness course
they will be a staircase weaving sticks and a tube. It’s very simple but it’s not for tricks it’s just for the animals who have had surgery or just a cold or joints to build up those muscles. Also for these dogs to have fun there still dogs and I still wanna run around and have a good time. Luckily I do have some experience from using the maker space that it’ll give me an upper hand when it comes to assembling some nice pieces. I already started to make some blueprints in sketch up. I have a few other sub projects, One is a fundraising call “ flocking“. Traditionally it’s when Someone pays for flamingos to be put in someone’s lawn, that money would go to whatever organization is running it. We decided to put a little spin on it and calling it being impounded. As a another sub project I’m creating some posters for them to use at some of their adoption events just to talk about icy dogs are great and just to promote them. Part 1:
I interviewed my mentor Laura Oliver her official title for this organization is director of operations and medical coordinator. Her main duties are pretty self-explanatory she oversees all the fosters all the other volunteers make sure everything’s in line. One of her main focus is the medical records of all the animals have been in the program and make sure that they get everything they need from meds to surgeries to dental work. Laura actually started this Organization back in 2011 her family growing up ran something similar to it so she was familiar with this type of program and really felt it weigh heavy on her heart and decided to do something about it. There isn’t much training if you do for this position more about the experience and what you learned along the way. The thing that she enjoys most about her job just being able to help you animals that are helpless themselves. Or be able to help families that can’t support their own dogs. Laura had another job as a teacher and finds both of these fulfilling. There really isn’t a typical workday here every day is different and everything is always changing. The turnarounds on Foster’s in different dogs is crazy you never know what’s gonna happen each day. Purpose behind this organization is to help elderly dogs that don’t get the appreciation and love what they deserve. Just because they’re slightly older and maybe have some issues doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to have a good life. It takes a lot to be successful one of the bigger things to remember is to stay organized and communicate with those who are part of this. One thing that is nice about this organization is that it’s nonprofit so the people that are a part of this organization want to be here but not here for the wrong reasons. Part 2: Truly do not have any questions that come to mind I feel like my mentor is really well spoken about her organization and is super passionate and doesn’t leave any details out. Why is that I can connect this back to going to high Tech is the whole idea of reaching out to the community and wanting to be connected. You’re always throwing fundraisers or events very similar to an exhibition. This organization has very similar I’ll be outgoing hope for the community and always tries to find the good in people but not for their own benefit for the animals benefit. . I was somewhat of a funny story we went to a shelter to go view some dogs that were potential for us to take him and there was a pitbull named Eli short for elephant because she looks like one. I swear on my life I’ve never seen a pitbull that fat and she was the sweetest little dog and she just made me laugh. . On that same day we saw Pomeranian that was shaved with just her on a tad a tiny full sweater as well the feistiest little things. Last year my internship was geared around building children’s confidence in themselves and branching out to new horizons for them and giving them hope, this internship is similar to my last in a way that we’re doing the same thing but for dogs and giving them a better life. My internship is a little different than the last internship I had. Both are
sort of unconventional in a good way. I’m on independent study because this nonprofit is ran out of my mentors home which I think is pretty neat. She fully converted her garage into a shelter for dogs. There’s a full on wash station for them huge shelves for all donations and food for the dogs. And there’s a whole other separate room with more space for more dogs. It’s mostly just me and my mentor, the dog trainer came over but that’s pretty much it. Right now we’re just trying to figure out what exact task she wants me to focus on for the next couple weeks. Something that I’m really looking forward to her internship is just hanging out with dogs. So far all the animals that I’ve met are unbelievably sweet and I can’t wait to get to know them more. Another thing I’m looking forward to is learning how she runs this out of her home and has a separate job. I’m hoping that I’m not in the way and I actually do contribute to this organization. Where are you going?
It is a non-profit organization called Lionel's Legacy. This program saves eldery dogs from being euthanized and placed in new homes. Lionel's Legacy raises money to help the dogs with all of their medical expenses. Who is your mentor and what do they do? My mentor is Laura Oliver one of the head organizers. |
