Overview:
In this project we learn about the Mexican holiday Dia De Los Muertos, which takes place on November 1st. This day is in honor of loved ones that have passed away. In memory of these people it is tradinal to create 'Ofendas' (offerings) as a way to remember the one we have lost.
1. How challenging was this project for you? Be specific.
For me this was challenging in a few ways. One way was that it was really hard to find a person to pick for my ofrenda, which in a way is a good thing because everyone I love are still living. Another challenge I was faced with was finding a way to honor my grandfather though this ofrenda. He died when I was just a young girl, so I don’t have a lot of memories of him. That made it difficult to decorate my ofrenda tailored to him.
2. What did you enjoy most about this Cultural Connections project?
One thing that I really enjoy about this project was not only learning about other cultures but I got to know more about my late grandfather. I got to talk with my family about him so I could get inspiration for my Ofenda. I also I liked looking at the different art pieces and going into more detail. Actually researching the art understanding what the it was representing.
3. Did you receive critique and feedback from anyone (teacher, parent, classmate, etc)? If so, who? Was the feedback helpful? (This could be for any part of the project, illustrated journal, ofrenda, exhibition)
The critique I got on my work, my ofenda, from my peers what only semi-helpful. It was mostly things like “add more things” or “a little plan”. For me that was not the most helpful but I still took what they said and tried to make it better. So in a way it did benefit me but not super specific.
4. What grade do you think you deserve? Why?
If was to grade myself I would give me a A. I did put effort into my ofenda and I do think this came out well. I am proud how I made my own candle and decorated it with french fries and flowers. Visually is pleasing to the eye and overall well put together. For exhibition I did help out the whole time. I painted faces for the hour than came for the last period to work again. I am very pleased overall with my work in this project.
5. If you could change something about this project, what would it be?
If I was to go back and change one thing in this project it was most likely be to get more pictures in my ofrenda and get more personal objects. Other than that I am still happy with all the work I have done and how it all turn out.
