Career Day 2018: For this Career day I shadowed a owner/director of a children's theater company. Jolene Bogard was the owner of Jojo productions. On the day that I shadowed her it was the night before their performance of Hairspray. For the majority of the day we were running last minute errands for props, sound equipment, and looking at the performance space. After the errands we organized customs and got ready for the dress rehearsal. The dress rehearsal took about 4 hours. I helped the actors get in their customs and got makeup on them. I had a script and watched the runthrough. After we had to clean up all the costumes and props. I enjoyed my day a lot. |
Q&A
1. What is your educational background that prepared you for this job? ¨At first I just went to a Jr College and lived at home. After two years at Jr College i applied to USC for the Television and Entertainment. I did not get into that school so I decided that shouldn't stop me. I got a job delivering scripts for a TV show. For about a year I did many jobs at a studio and meeting a lot of people. In that time I applied three times to USC and didn't get in. |
My last resort was my connections. I asked directors and managers that I have connections with and they wrote me recommandations and I finally got into the school of Television and entertainment."
2. What advice do you have for someone who wants this career?
"You can start from anywhere with any job in the industry. Work your way up and learn as you go."
3. What is your everyday like?
"It really depends of how close we are to a show. Take today for example we are running last minute errands for props and sound. We have a dress rehearsal to check on the costumes and fixing blocking. I go out to see where I can put posters up to promote the shows. Everyday is always a little different and I like that."
4. What is challenging about owning your own theater company?
" I love it but there are always a hard part. I work with kids ages 5-18, supringy it's not the kids that give me the hard time it's the parents. The kids are excited to be doing theatres but the parents just have their own opinion of what I should be doing with my company. "
5. What made you want to own your own company?
" I worked in television for about 15 years and it was amazing but toxic. I took a short break from working in television and volunteered at my daughters theater company. I ended up working at 5 different childrens companies in the last five years. Each place wasn't being ran in a efficient way so I wanted to make my own. "
